چکیده

In 1942 Winkler and Smith (1), studying the simultaneous renal clearances of exogenous creatinine and potassium in dogs following the injection of potassium salts, concluded that potassium is normally filtered at the glomerulus and subjected to a variable degree of tubular reabsorption. The highest potassium/creatinine clearance ratio obtained by these authors was 0.40. In 1948 Berliner and Kennedy (2), and Mudge, Foulks and Gilman (3) independently and simultaneously published convincing evidence for active renal tubular excretion4 of potassium in the dog. The former authors obtained potassium/creatinine clearance ratios as high as 1.33 in trained dogs receiving oral potassium chloride for one week before the experiment, and hypertonic solutions of this substance intravenously during the experiment. The latter investigators obtained potassium/creatinine clearance ratios as high as 1.39 in anesthetized dogs receiving intravenous potassium chloride during urea-induced osmotic diuresis. McCance and Widdowson (4) in 1937 were the first to suggest the possibility of tubular excretion of potassium in man. They observed an isolated potassium/inulin clearance ratio of 1.24 in a man suffering from acute alkalosis at a time when his inulin clearance was depressed to 9.3 ml./min. In 1943 Keith, King and, Osterberg (5) stated that they observed

Combination Therapy with Losartan and α-Tocopherol in Acute Ureteral Obstruction-Induced Renal Excretory Dysfunction and Acidification Defect

Background: Previous study by the authors showed that a-tocopherol prevents oxidative stress but would not improve depressed excretory variables in post-obstructed kidney (POK) after release of 24-h unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO). This study is a supplementary investigation on the effects of a-tocopherol combined with an antagonist of angiotensin-II type-1 (AT1) receptor on renal dysfunc...

The effect of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells on renal function and histopathology in a rat model of ischemia-reperfusion induced acute kidney injury

Objective(s): It has been shown that adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSC) have protective effects in acute kidney injury (AKI). This study was conducted to assess the therapeutic effects of AD-MSC in rats subjected to acute kidney injury by 45 min of renal ischemia followed by 48 hr of reperfusion (I/R). Materials and Methods:...

Abnormalities of sodium excretion and other disorders of renal function in fulminant hepatic failure.

Renal function was evaluated in 40 patients with fulminant hepatic failure, They were divided into two groups on the basis of glomerular filtration rates greater than 40 ml/min or less than 25 ml/min. A number of patients in group 1 had markedly abnormal renal retention of sodium together with a reduced free water clearance and low potassium excretion which could be explained by increased proxi...

Distal Renal Tubular Acidosis with Grade 4 Vesicoureteral Reflux in a Child with Single Kidney

Introduction Renal tubular acidosis (RTA) is a non-uremic defects of urinary acidification. It is characterized by a normal anion gap hyperchloremic  metabolic acidosis; plasma potassium may be normal, low or high-depending on the type of RTA. These syndromes differ from uremic acidosis which is associated with a high anion gap, decreased glomerular filtration with enhanced proton secretion b...

Reversal of postischemic acute renal failure with a selective endothelinA receptor antagonist in the rat.

Studies were designed to examine the effect of a selective endothelinA (ETA) receptor antagonist, BQ123, on severe postischemic acute renal failure (ARF) in Sprague-Dawley rats. Severe ARF was induced in uninephectomized, chronically instrumented rats by 45-min renal artery occlusion. BQ123 (0.1 mg/kg.min) or vehicle was infused intravenously for 3 h on the day after ischemia. Measurements befo...
